San Juan Café serves up gourmet Latin American cuisine in the heart of Wilmington, with a distinctive menu that has plenty of fresh coastal flavor and just a dash of southern influence.
San Juan Café is the brainchild of Chef Danny Keegan, a Puerto Rican native who grew up in the town of Guanica and learned to cook from his mother. Danny went on to study Culinary Arts at Johnson & Whales University in Charleston before starting his Wilmington restaurant, where the extensive menu has a world of cuisine that’s inspired by his early Latin American roots. The friendly and laid-back restaurant has a number of traditional entrees and sandwiches, with local favorites like the overstuffed Chile Rellenos, the decadent Steak Mofongo, and the slightly upscale Dos Patos with confit duck breast and leg, and thick corn pancakes. There’s also lots of lunch and occasional brunch specials, like “Bistek con Huevos” or steak and eggs with caramelized onions, Monte Crisco sandwiches, and Chorizo and sweet potato hash. All of these delicacies can be washed down with ice cold margaritas, and drink (and food) specials are available on a regular basis for the Happy Hour crowd. Vibrantly different, San Juan Café introduces local surfers and foodies alike to an entire new spin on Latin American cuisine.
