Water lovers who want to explore the picturesque waters of the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW), or who want an easy trek to the nearby Masonboro Island, will want to head to the small but scenic Trails End Park. Located in the town of Wilmington just a few miles south of the downtown region, this small public park has built a reputation as one of the best - (and yet still secretive) - fishing and boating destinations in the New Hanover county area.
Trails End Park is located just off of Masonboro Loop Road, and is a picturesque park that borders the ICW, and which offers fantastic vistas of the barely-distant Masonboro Island Coastal Reserve. The park features a boat ramp that’s suited for kayaks and small vessels that are 22’ ft. long or less, as well as an on-site fishing pier that borders the salty waters. In addition, because it’s nicely close to saltmarshes and ICW waters, the site is a great birding destination, as well as a scenic spot for visitors who appreciate a stunning waterfront view. Located slightly off the beaten path, but featuring plenty of scenery and fun times on the water to go around, Trails End Park is a unique destination that perfectly exemplifies Wilmington’s relaxed waterfront scene.

Fort Anderson, also known as Brunswick Town, is the historic site of the first permanent settlement in the Cape Fear area. Established nearly 300 years ago in 1726, and destroyed just a few decades later by British Soldiers during the start of the Revolutionary War in 1776, visitors can still explore the ancient ruins of this long-gone civilization and enjoy a glimpse into the area’s centuries-deep roots.
Visitors who want to take a break from Carolina Beaches' busy surfside scene, and instead enjoy its acres of wild, undeveloped territory, can pay a visit to the sprawling Carolina Beach State Park.
