The Cottage
This is a 650 square foot bungalow on Oak Island, NC — eight mins. on foot to the beach, newly modernized, and cared for by a North Carolina family who wanted it to feel like a place worth coming back to. It's modest by design. Two bedrooms, one bath, a kitchen that feels like home, and enough space to actually relax without rattling around in a home too big for the trip you're on. We remodeled it ourselves, made decisions we'd want someone to make for us, and supplied it the way we'd want to find it. The diffuser is on the counter. The starter oils are there if you want them. The towels are soft.
The Space
The bungalow sleeps up to 6 comfortably — ideal for a couple looking to get away or a family who wants Oak Island without the resort price tag. The kitchen is entirely equipped for real cooking: not just a microwave and a coffee maker, but actual pots and pans, dishes, and counter space. If you want to do a fish fry after a day at the beach, you can do that here. The living area is open and simple. Good natural light, comfortable seating, and no clutter. Both bedrooms are peaceful and comfortable. We didn't cut corners on the beds. The bathroom is refreshed and outfitted with the basics — you won't arrive to find a half-empty soap dispenser and a single thin towel.
The Beach
Eight mins.. That's it. It's a flat, simple walk — you don't need a car to get to the water. Oak Island has some of the most uncrowded beaches on the North Carolina coast, which is part of why we appreciate it. It's not Myrtle Beach. It's not packed with jet skis and beach vendors. It's peaceful, wide and calming. You'll find your own stretch of sand. Kids can run. Couples can walk. The water is warm in the summer and the sunsets are something you don't want to miss.
Oak Island is also within painless reach of Southport — a modest historic waterfront town about ten mins. away. Good food, local stores, a ferry to Bald Head Island if you want a day trip. It's the kind of place that surprises people who've never been.
The Location
Oak Island sits on the southern coast of North Carolina, about 45 mins. south of Wilmington. If you're flying in, ILM (Wilmington International) is your airport. The island itself is residential and unhurried. No high-rises. No chain eateries crowding the waterfront. Most of what you'll find here is local — seafood shacks, ice cream stores, a few good breakfast spots. Grocery stores are a short drive. The bungalow is positioned so that you can walk to the beach, walk to a few close by spots, and leave the car parked most of the day if you want to.
What We've Stocked
We didn't want you to arrive and immediately have to run to the store for basics. Here's what you'll find: The kitchen has cooking oil, salt, pepper, hot sauce, regular and decaf coffee, coffee filters, K-cups, a few dishwasher pods, and a couple laundry tiles. Paper towels, dish soap, new sponge and new stainless steel scrubber.
Towels and linens are supplied. Each guest gets 2 upsized towels, 2 hand towels, 2 washcloths, and 1 Beach towel. 2 makeup towels are also included.
The Young Living diffuser in the main living area is yours to use. We've left a few starter oils — lavender, peppermint, and lemon. Run it while you unpack. It makes the place feel like yours faster than anything else we know to do. Add 2 drops of each oil to the diffuser for our favorite scent.
A Few Notes:
We run a clean, honest listing. Here's what that means practically:
Check-in is at 4 PM. Check-out is at 10 AM. We keep that window tight because our cleaning crew needs it — and because the next guests deserve the same clean bungalow you arrived to. We ask that you treat the place the way you'd want someone to treat yours. No smoking on the property. No events. Let us know if something breaks — we'd rather fix it than have you work around it. Animals are not allowed. min. occupancy is 6 guests. The bungalow is constructed for a modest group and works best that way. Parking space for 2 cars.
Why We Constructed This:
We're Adam and Mollie Flasch — a North Carolina family of six, rooted on the same piece of family land for six generations. Chinkapin Hill NC is our social brand. When we're not homeschooling, raising our four kids, or working on our home, we're building a life that's grounded in faith and modest, honest rhythms. This bungalow is a piece of that. We updated it ourselves, chose every piece of furnishings with care, and supplied it the way we'd like it for our family. It's a place we hope you'll feel welcome in — not just comfortable, but genuinely cared for. We pray for every family that stays here. Before your trip, we ask God to give you rest, real connection, and a few long, good days by the water. That's not something we say to fill a page — it's something we actually do.
We hope you visit again and again!
